The Butler Grizzlies continued their impressive season with a commanding 4-1 victory over Dodge City on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex. This win boosted their record to 12-2-4 overall and 12-2-2 in conference play.
Butler came to the game with a strong tone, with sophomore defender Giselle Nash scoring in the 4th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Sakiko Manabe, marking Nash’s second goal of the season. Manabe was the big difference in the game with her playmaking abilities, making another assist in the 11th minute when sophomore forward Maya Hoge found the net, increasing Butler’s lead to 2-0. The Grizzlies controlled much of the first half, maintaining steady offensive pressure. Butler created a lot of offensive opportunities, including shots by sophomore forward Kyndell Letcher and sophomore midfielder Ruby Kilden, though Dodge City goalkeeper Ana Ramirez-Cortes made key saves to keep her team within reach.
Dodge City emerged stronger in the second half, narrowing the gap in the 55th minute with Naomy Parra scoring her first goal of the season from an assist by Mariam El Mir, bringing the score to 2-1.
The Grizzlies weren't undeterred and worked even harder to maintain control of the game and deny any chance of Dodge City tying the game. This resulted in 72nd minute, when freshman forward London Ingram scored her 15th goal of the season with an assist from Kilden, pushing Butler’s advantage to 3-1. Butler continued to dominate the game, and another opportunity came in in the 83rd minute when Nash scored her third goal of the season, from an assist from Manabe, who had three assists in the game
Despite Dodge City's efforts, Butler’s defense remained solid, with goalie Rylie Schiffelbein making crucial saves. Dodge City’s offense was further damaged by fouls and a yellow card issued to El Mir in the 79th minute.
With this win, Butler prepares to carry their momentum into their next matchup, playing Seward County on Friday, Nov. 1 for the Region 6 Tournament Quarterfinals.
