During the month of February, is always a special month for black people as they celebrate Black History Month. The Black Student Association (BSA) at Butler were excited to present an occasion that would celebrate African American culture’s rich legacy and strength. One of the ideas that surfaced was a presentation to students on the history of the Negro Baseball Leagues.
This was more than just another event for the BSA, it was a chance to shine a light on a portion of history that can often be forgotten or ignored by the general narrative. According to Aletra Chaney-Profit, one of the individuals involved in the organization of the event, the decision to host the league was met with intrigue She said, “When I received an email about the league I was intrigued”. I believed it would bring insight into the history of the Negro Leagues, be very informative, and a great presentation for our students.”
Together with Butler Foundation’s Harold Smith Cultural Series, the Black Student Association set out to bring the distinguished historian and filmmaker Byron Motley and his exciting documentary to campus.
The son of legendary Negro League player, Bob Motley, has dedicated a part of his career to preserving and sharing the rich history of African American baseball. His film offers a fascinating trip the victories and setbacks of the Negro Leagues, offering glimpses into the untold tales of its clubs and players. The plans were set in motion to bring this spectacular event to the students of Butler.
The presentation and documentary gave the students an inspiring educational experience, providing a deep understanding of the background, history and legacy of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Gave visitors a thorough explanation of what players had to go through in the times were racial segregation plagued American society.
In addition to teaching students about the background of African American baseball, Motley’s study of the successes and failures of the Negro Leagues offered insightful analysis of the larger fight for social justice and civil rights in America.
The presentation of the Negro Baseball League’s history served as powerful tribute to the struggles African American athletes had to go through and the strength and resilience they showed. Through the collective efforts of the BSA, students of Butler were provided with an impactful educational experience in Black History Month.
