Delta Psi Omega is a dramatic fraternity/society that is used to raise funds for theatre at Butler CC.
Sophomore Sarah McKay is the Delta Psi Omega president and on Friday, Aug. 16, and they hosted a back to school movie night for the members of the group after their theatre retreat for scholars in the program.
Vice President Rhye Porter and his mom provided much of the food, and the party, the group watched Theater Camp. McKay enjoyed the film.
“It's a very self-aware movie playing on stereotypes of actors, writers and directors,” McKay said. “We voted on the movie, and everyone ended up really loving it.”
Porter and McKay wanted to kick off the year with a bang and also welcome everyone returning to school. Originally, the plan was to have a pool party, but the weather got the best of them and they decided on a movie night instead. They chose this movie on a vote with the whole fraternity, but she was the one who suggested it. It came out last year, and it's just a very good laugh and relatable for theatre kids like them.
“The past few years, Delta Psi has honestly dropped the ball with activities and its mission,” McKay said. “Our main mission is to obviously raise funds for the theatre, but also to connect our actors and techies. This year, our team is really trying to rebrand Delta Psi Omega and create something people are passionate about and excited to join.”
They did have an official naming ceremony at the end of last year. Everyone a part of the fraternity gets a special name that revolves around them and their personality. Her name is “Songbird,” because she is known to be singing quite a bit and Porter is “Angel” because he is as sweet as can be.
“That experience was very fun; however, this year we plan to make the event much more ceremonial and unique and much sooner in the second semester,” McKay said. “We also have Delta Psi jackets being made currently with our theatre logo and each person's name embroidered on it. They will come in two color options of green or pink as those are official Delta Psi colors.”
