The first steps of the 2024 Presidential election

The state of Kansas held its third-ever presidential primary on Tuesday, March 19, the first primary election since 1992.

This was a departure from the state’s typical caucus system and gave Kansans a chance to vote in one of the first milestones of the 2024 election. The change was authorized by a House Bill, passed in 2023 as state lawmakers hoped for a higher voter turnout. Unless a similar legislature is passed, the traditional caucus system will return for 2028.

Four candidates from each major political party filed for the Kansas ballot, and all candidates, including those who suspended their campaigns, remained on the ballot.

The Republican ballot included Trump, Nikki Haley of South Carolina, Ron DeSantis of Florida and Ryan Binkley of Texas. Haley, DeSantis and Binkley have suspended their campaigns. Trump was the official Republican nominee before the preference primaries.

The Democratic ballot listed Biden, Jason Palmer of Maryland, Dean Phillips of Minnesota and Marianne Williamson of California. Phillips has suspended his campaign. Williamson suspended hers, and then announced in late February that she was un-suspending her campaign. Biden was the official Democratic nominee before the primaries.

In the Republican race, Donald Trump won the primary vote with 75%, followed by Nikki Haley with 16%. In the democratic race, Joe Biden won the vote with 81%, followed by “none of the above,” with 10%.
