As students, we sometimes experience confusion or misunderstanding from the classes we take. It’s there that sophomore cybersecurity major, Annabelle Namugerwa, does her best work.

Having “unofficially started helping classmates since high school‘’ she said, Namugerwa has turned her passion for helping others into a necessary campus service.

This sophomore tutors in public speaking, sociology, computer classes English Comp 1 and 2.

“I always seemed to have an easy understanding of things,’’ Namugerwa said. Though she loves what she does, Namugerwa point out a few misconceptions about job.

“Some students think that coming to ask for help at the tutoring lab will not make them look good,” she said.

Namugerwa explains that facing the fear of being seen as not intelligent enough, some students are afraid to use the tutoring lab.

“First of all ask: We can help you out and if you can't, then do not fear to engage with the instructor during office hours,” Namugerwa said. “We are not here to judge you; we are here to help”.

Another big mistake of students is the misconceptions of what is truly a tutor. Tutors are not replacement to the instructor but rather some help to understand the material.

“Sometimes some come and see us as instructors,” Namugerwa said. “We are just students who are helping out. We can’t replace your professor, so if you missed a class and you come to us to compensate (this), we won’t be able to make it.”

Besides her tutoring position, Namugerwa is a cybersecurity major.

“(I) hope to have enough experience to be growing in (the) career to climb the ladder and be able to make some cybersecurity information,” she said.

Finally,, Namugerwa’s top tip would be “to not be afraid to ask for help, because when we help you, it help us to have a better understanding of what we are trying to explain.”

There are two tutoring labs located on the El Dorado and Andover campuses. In Andover, students can find the tutoring lab in Room 5200 and in El Dorado at the 1500 building in Room 124.
