Marian steps into the spotlight: A tale of courage and Self-acceptance

This fall, Butler CC’s theater department staged “Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood,” a play that retells the classic legend through Marian’s perspective. With a mix of humor, action and heartfelt storytelling, the production asked audiences to reflect on courage, identity and self-acceptance.

Behind the scenes, students like Cheyenne Trower, a theater performance major on a technical theater scholarship, worked tirelessly to bring the world of Marian to life.

“You can tell a lot of the story by the costumes,” Trower said. “It puts emphasis on which character is which and how they live and function day to day.”

She even crafted Robin Hood’s iconic hat herself, a piece she said “takes up a big part of my heart.”

On stage, actors found meaning in their roles as well. One cast member, Kallahan Mielenz, a media arts and production major, who played both Tanner and a guard, shared, “Tanner is a fun and charismatic character, but I think he has hidden issues despite being happy. If he were around today, he would be an activist.”

That sense of optimism balanced with struggle echoes the play’s deeper theme of finding strength in authenticity.

For the technical team, collaboration made the story shine.

“The spectacle of theatre can be just as important as the acting,” Caden Runnalls, the technical director, said. “The design should feel fun at first glance but reward a closer look with meaning.”

Through its performances and design, “Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood” reminded the campus community that true bravery begins with self-acceptance.

Marian steps into the Spotlight: A tale of Courage and self-acceptance (en inglés)

Este otoño, el departamento de teatro de Butler CC representó "Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood", una obra que narra la leyenda clásica a través de la perspectiva de Marian. Con una mezcla de humor, acción y narración sincera, la producción pidió al público reflexionar sobre el coraje, la identidad y la auto-aceptación.

Entre bastidores, estudiantes como Cheyenne Trower, una estudiante de teatro con una beca técnica de teatro, trabajaron incansablemente para dar vida al mundo de Marian.
