Chief Chris Williams’ mother, who was a nurse, and his father met while guarding a prisoner at the hospital she was working at. Growing up, the Jackson, Mississippi, native played basketball and football. He was also part of the JROTC Program and was a member of the Honor Society.

Williams, who moved into the role of Police Chief in early July of this year, never sought out to be a police officer; it was not something he envisioned. Originally, he aspired to become an athletic trainer or personal trainer. However, throughout his interactions and experiences with others he found himself drawn to law enforcement.
Chief Williams’ path to law enforcement was influenced by his time serving as a juvenile corrections officer. He had a desire to challenge adolescents’ minds on the negative beliefs of law enforcement. Williams' father also worked as a police officer, and he and other local law enforcement had a positive impact in the community, which motivated him to become part of that solution.
“What made me choose to get into law enforcement is because I was around the juveniles,” Williams said. “(The inmates and the staff) who were in the facility, and they all complained and said ‘the police officers are bad; police officers are dirty. There are no good police officers. I do not like police officers’. I said to myself, like, ‘that is impossible because my dad is a police officer’.”
Seemingly so, Williams did just that. After he left his job as a youth corrections officer, Williams went to work at the Wichita Police Department (WPD). At the time, juvenile inmates he looked after told Williams that they were excited he was becoming a cop because he exceeded their expectations that not all cops are bad cops.
“The residents were excited,” Williams said. “It is like, ‘at least we got somebody out there that we know can be fair and can be that understanding that is willing to understand what we may be going through and look at something differently’.”
He was, and still is, driven to challenge negative perspectives and wants to build trust from the people with law enforcement and the community, particularly the Black community.
Williams acknowledges the issues African Americans have with law-enforcement in the trust that might not be there. Williams wants to change that perspective--particularly among the Black community. He also acknowledges the importance of having a relationship of trust with the community.
Among his law enforcement background, Williams recalls a rewarding moment. Less than 10 years ago, while working for WPD, Williams got a call to help a family who were living in a motel get back on their feet. The family of six were living in the same motel room. The youngest child, a nine-year-old, never had a room to herself. As Williams was helping them locate housing, he recalls how the young child felt. He stressed that the youngest girl was so happy that she finally had her own room and her siblings were also excited for her. For Williams, this was rewarding because he was able to return hope to this family.
Williams explains that among all things, be resilient, advocate for yourself while being true to yourself and love yourself.
“Love, love my family (and) love God,” Williams said. “No one is perfect but work to help others to be alike in this dark world.”
He hopes to leave a legacy of love behind, to spread love and positivity in the world.
