"Close your eyes and say the word: Vagina. How does it feel? Uncomfortable? Empowering? The play, “The Vagina Monologues,” forces audiences to confront these feelings.
“Vagina” is often a subject that women are ashamed of talking about and one way of breaking the war between the word and women is “The Vagina Monologues.” “The Vagina Monologues” was originally written by V, formerly known as Eve Ensler, in 1996 to talk about women and their journey with their vagina.
The work shares unique, diverse stories of women who have endured the injustice of being female. Through their trauma, sorrow and pain, “The Vagina Monologues” becomes more than just narratives of wounded women as it’s a powerful call to raise awareness about how the system has failed to protect them. More importantly, the prose offers an opportunity to “give people a chance to think about them with an alternate perspective and allows them the freedom to talk about it and express their feelings in a supportive environment,” as Erin M. Urick, the production’s director, said.
“I hope the audience will get a chance to learn something new or at least have a new context for what they already thought they knew,” Urick said. “I hope they will feel more comfortable talking about these topics and advocating for themselves and those they love. I hope they will see themselves in the stories and anecdotes that are shared and not feel alone in their experiences.”
"The Vagina Monologues” will run on Wednesday and Thursday starting at 8 p.m. Pick up your tickets at the Box Office or reserve them online.
