We are all Jimmy Kimmel now
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” That is the First Amendment of the constitution, the document that lays out the fundamental values of the United States.
So why are ‘we the people’ letting it be tossed around? President Donald Trump has flirted with the idea of a third term, suggested the government might take away birthright citizenship and denied people the act of due process, which violates the constitution. The one that should scare you the most though as a journalist, is saying that President Trump feels it should be illegal to openly criticize him.
The New York Times quotes President Trump as saying, “They’ll take a great thing and make it bad. See I think that’s really illegal”. This was said Friday, Sept 12, five days before ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s TV show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Kimmel’s suspension came after he said, “The MAGA gang is desperately trying to characterize this kid that murdered Charlie Kirk as anything but one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
Kirk was a far-right political figure who was assassinated at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, Sept. 10. This comment about MAGA, trying to characterize Kirk’s suspected killer as anything other than one of them, came after thousands of online claims that the killer was left leaning or a registered democrat. The suspected killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was registered as neither republican nor democrat.
Many in America saw Kimmel’s suspension as unjustifiable and as a threat to free speech. President Trump is also quoted with saying “Personally, you can’t take, you can’t have a free airwave if you’re getting free airwaves from the United States government.”
It’s important to note that ABC does not use ‘federal airwaves’ or get federal funding as they are owned by Disney, a private company.
These comments aren’t just musings from an old man; they are comments made by the President of the United States. That alone should scare people, but there are still thousands who don’t care about any amendment other than the Second Amendment. The First Amendment isn’t the only one that is in danger either. The talk of a third term is illegal under the 22nd Amendment; asking the Supreme Court if you can ‘end birthright citizenship’ would violate the 14th Amendment and depriving people of life and liberty without due process is a direct violation of the Fifth Amendment.
President Trump has been in office for 260 days, and he’s already began to violate three out of the 27 amendments. Even though Kimmel’s suspension ended on Tuesday, Sept. 23 and his show has since aired, Kimmel is just one of the first in a long line of dominoes. At this point, we the people are all Jimmy Kimmel. If we do not use our right to free speech to condemn this behavior, who’s to say that the First Amendment won’t be taken from us next?
