Butler offers Floor Covering Boot Camp

Students can be only 31 hours away from becoming a floor-installing professional. “Introduction to Floor Covering Installation Boot Camp” meets Feb. 27-28 and March  6-7. It provides a springboard into a high-demand construction career.

Jon Cressler is Director of Career and Workforce Education.

“It’s the basics of getting started in the [floor-installation] industry; somebody can try it out before they commit to an entire career in it,” said Cressler.

Dwayne Pruitt, owner of Pruitt Flooring - along with Jonathan Varden, who works for International Certified Flooring Installers Association - will present the course. From studying construction safety to leveling and sealing carpets and tile, students are trained in floor laying.

Students will take the foundational skills one step further by creating and polishing their resumes.

There will be additional benefits if students seek job opportunities.

“We can call in some of the area flooring providers that are hiring and have a mini career fair or a hiring event,” said Cressler.

For some Kansans, the class can be inexpensive. This is made possible through federal funding from the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. More information is available at this LINK.

“We have you complete a form online. And if you qualify, you can take this $2000 class for $100,” said Cressler.

This bootcamp may add to previous experience for construction workers or can serve as a springboard for beginners to achieve a greater building certification.

“Even if it’s not the [only] requirement of their job, they can go out and work on things like that as needed,” said Cressler.

“It’s just an extra skill to put in their tool kit”.

This certification also offers an avenue for those in the justice system to reenter the workforce.

The floor laying bootcamp could help “folks wanting to leave incarceration [to] go out and pick up some skills that they’d be able to apply and find a job,” Cressler said.

Sign up for the course at the course website HERE. Course dates are Feb. 27-28 and March 6-7.
