Foreign Language Department is Inclusive to all Students

Kelsey E. Harper, Department Chair of Foreign Language, has lots to say about the Foreign Language Department at Butler Community College.

“We focus on practical language skills. Through our Spanish Certificate of Proficiency, our profession-related courses or our cost-saving Open Educational Resources initiative” Harper.

Harper has been the Department Chair for over five years, but her first role was an adjunct instructor teaching at Butler between finishing her master’s degree and starting her PhD. Before returning to Butler, Harper had the opportunity to teach at a few other institutions while working on her graduate degrees.

“I was excited to learn about a full-time job opportunity at Butler. I was just finishing up my PhD, and the timing was perfect. It feels like everything came full circle” Harper said.

Growing up, Harper only spoke English. She didn’t have the opportunity to take a language course until "Beginning Spanish 1" at Butler.

“It was in that class where I realized how much language can open new perspectives, allow me to see the world differently, and build connections I never would have had otherwise," said Harper.

Harper's experience studying at Butler sparked her passion for Spanish and followed her all the way to a Doctorate in Hispanic Linguistics at Texas A&M University. Now, she's teaching the same courses that first inspired her to study Spanish which makes her role as department chair even more meaningful to her.

The Foreign Language department is very diverse and serves students who are just starting out in a new language, as well as those looking to build on prior experience. Anyone is welcome. The Spanish Certificate of Proficiency is open to any Butler student interested in improving their Spanish speaking skills. Community members are also welcome to enroll at Butler to complete the certificate.

“Our courses are also ideal for students in various career pathways to improve their communication skills and be able to use those skills in a future profession,” said Harper.

Language courses are available both online and face-to-face, giving students flexibility. Classes are offered at both Andover and El Dorado campuses. Classes begin every fall and spring. Beginning Spanish 1 (FL107) and Beginning Spanish 2 (FL108) are usually offered as 8-week summer courses as well. French and Russian courses are also offered.

“Though the offerings are smaller, they still provide valuable opportunities for students interested in broadening their proficiency in these languages," said Harper.

The biggest project Harper and her team have been working on has been the development of Spanish Open Educational Resources. A small group has been collaborating to create a textbook covering three levels of Spanish, which will replace the traditional textbook and be free for students. Department member Amanda Hadley has been leading the effort with a platform called Libre Texts.

An official Spanish club under the Student Government Association is also in the process.

“Over the past year, we’ve had an informal conversation club, and it’s been wonderful watching students engage outside of class. This official club will take those opportunities to the next level," said Harper.

The department’s focus on making language learning practical and relevant for students in any field is fantastic. They wish to encourage students to see how language skills can enhance their careers, even in small ways that make a big difference.
