Tutoring center: Free resources available for students

Academic pressures can feel overwhelming for college students, especially when paired with the expectations and schedules that often befall a young adult. But Butler CC is committed to promoting academic success by providing services to students.

Butler CC seeks to help, offering support services in all areas of education. The tutoring center offers face-to-face assistance in math, science and English, as well as other, more specified
courses.

The tutoring lab is made up of 20 tutors, each having different schedules and services to offer. Students can view the availability of each tutor on the Butler CC website under the ‘Tutoring’ section.

While the tutors help with students’ success, there are some stipulations to what they can help with. The tutors cannot guarantee one on one tutoring, they do not help with algebra certifies and they will not ‘edit’ students’ essays. Students also must bring their student I.D. card when meeting with a tutor.

Amber Saengerhausen is one of the many tutors Butler CC has to offer. She is available Monday through Friday, hours varying, on the El Dorado campus.

“The best part about being a tutor is helping students feel more confident and comfortable with their classes and the work they are doing,” Saengerhausen said.

Another support service includes the Online Writing Lab (OWL), “a free service available to students currently enrolled in courses on any Butler campus or in Butler Online courses,” according to the Butler CC website.

OWL is staffed by Butler CC professors who teach Comp and Literature courses. Students can enroll in the OWL Canvas course, and submit papers to the course for help editing. After submission, the editors review the paper, and return it to the student within 48 hours, with 5-10 suggestions to improve the paper.

Students from any department can utilize the OWL resource. “We don‘t edit for content, but focus on the structure and mechanics of the writing instead,” the FAQ page assures.

OWL, and other tutoring resources, can help students to improve their writing and studying skills, not just in the academic setting, but throughout their future careers. Studies show that when applying for a job, candidates who display excellent writing skills often stand out in the application pool.
