Carter, known as “TC,” leaves behind a legacy defined by athletic excellence and academic achievement. Under his leadership, Butler secured three national championships in football, two in softball and national titles in both the men’s and women’s half-marathon. More than just titles, Carter fostered a culture that developed not only championship teams but also future coaches.
In the wake of Carter’s retirement announcement, a leadership transition committee convened to determine the next chapter for Grizzly athletics. On Thursday, May 29, Mike Helmer will step into Carter’s shoes as the next athletic director. Helmer is a long-time head coach of the women’s basketball team.
“Please join me in welcoming Mike into this new role and in congratulating Todd Carter for his years of service to Butler and Grizzly athletics,” said Bill Rinkenbaugh in an email to the campus community.
Helmer brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of Butler’s values, having built a strong women’s basketball program over the years. His promotion signals a continued commitment to fostering homegrown leadership and sustaining the high standards established during Carter’s nearly four-decade career.
The campus community will celebrate Carter’s retirement and Helmer’s appointment in the coming weeks, marking both the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Butler athletics.
