Be Aware of College AI Policies

Imagine it's 11 p.m., and you have just 59 minutes to submit five assignments. The tab opens next to your Canvas page? ChatGPT. Not too surprising, right? 

Nowadays, AI has been integrated into almost everything and education is no exception. We regularly use AI to accomplish a lot, from writing essays to solving math problems. Although many admit that this technology can be helpful in education, it’s becoming clear that many students don’t just use AI as a tool, they let it do all the work. That’s where the problem starts. 

“When you use a free version of something, usually you are treading on your privacy your data,” said Miranda Windholz, a research and instruction librarian.  

Last spring, Windholz became deeply interested in AI and how to handle it properly. But according to her, there isn’t yet a perfect way to manage it; AI is still too new. 

The main purpose of education is to help students absorb knowledge that will benefit them not only in the workplace, but also in life. If students constantly copy and paste what AI generates, they risk compromising their future. Understanding the impact of AI on learning, Butler CC (BCC) has implemented policies to help students use AI responsibly, rather than rely on it completely. 

It is now required that each instructor whether teaching online or in person  

 include an AI policy, which is located in the syllabus on Canvas. However, it appears that each instructor has the right to define specific uses of AI according to their course goals. The best way for a student to avoid violating the rules is by reading the syllabus carefully to understand that instructor’s AI policy. 

“What we are trying to do is make the student use their brain instead of a machine,” Jim (William) Buchhorn, professor of English and chair, said. "All these policies are there to help students grow their knowledge and learn the most about.”
