Gold Fest: All About Community

On Saturday, Sept. 27, El Dorado held their third annual Gold Fest. The first unofficial Gold Fest was held in 2021 organized to celebrate El Dorado’s 150th anniversary under the name 150 Fest. Gold Fest became an annual event after seeing how well the community received 150 Fest. The name Gold Fest comes from the meaning of El Dorado, which is ‘city of gold’. There were food vendors like Kona Ice, Taters n Toppings and Tacos Pina. Several events went on throughout the week in El Dorado. 

One event available to attend was the museum crawl, which started at 10 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m. The museums that participated are the World War 2 History Center, Kansas Oil Museum, Coutts Museum of Art and the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The time spent in the World War 2 History Center was informative and enriching. There were helpful signs with explanations about what significance the of the historical items were. 

Olivia Malanchuk is a key part of the Experience El Dorado team. Malanchuk is the Experience El Dorado marketing specialist.  

“We expect about 3,000 to 5,000 festival goers, and we hope to continue to grow the event,” Malanchuk said when asked about the expected size of the festival.  

The Experience El Dorado team works with around 300 people and organizations. These organizations include Public Works to confirm days for road closures, Alcohol and Beverage Control to ensure vendors are properly licensed and the police department to make sure everything stays safe and under control. 

Other events that were held on Saturday included two musical acts. 24k Magic is a Bruno Mars tribute band. They have performed in 41 states and 11 countries per their website. World Class Rockers is the other musical act. The band is made up of Nick St. Nicholas and Michael Monarch of Steppenwolf, Randall Hall of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aynsley Dunbar of Journey, Greg Walker of Santana and Fran Cosmo of Boston. Past members include Bobby Kimball of Toto and Joey Molland of Badfinger. 

When asked what her favorite part of the festival was, Jo Ann Turkett said that “getting to see and connect with young people.” 

 When asking this question, answers varied, some people said that the Kona Ice truck was their favorite part while others said that a plant bus was theirs. Emily Domke, who attended Saturday’s events, described Gold Fest as “community,” which sums up the festival. Gold Fest is for and about the community.

El sábado 27 de septiembre, El Dorado celebró su tercer festival anual de oro. El primer festival de oro no oficial se celebró en 2021 organizado para celebrar El 150 aniversario de El Dorado bajo El nombre 150 Fest. Gold Fest se convirtió en un evento anual después de ver lo bien que la comunidad recibió 150 Fest. El nombre Gold Fest proviene del significado de El Dorado, que es "ciudad de oro". Había vendedores de comida como Kona Ice, Taters n Toppings y Tacos piña. Varios eventos ocurrieron a lo largo de la semana en El Dorado.
