Volunteers Play Crucial Role in Gold Fest Success

Gold Fest drew hundreds of families to enjoy a fun-filled weekend on Saturday, Sept. 28, and it was the dedicated volunteers who made it all possible. From coordinating children’s activities to managing the logistics behind the scenes, volunteers from the local community ensured that the event ran smoothly, showcasing the power of teamwork and service.

Cathy Gray, the department chair of Early Childhood Education at Butler CC, took a leading role in the Kids Zone, where she and her team offered a variety of hands-on activities for children.

“Our goal was to provide engaging, play-based activities that children could enjoy with minimal adult guidance,” Gray said.

With activities such as sand art, scratch art, and glow-in-the-dark rock painting, children of all ages were kept entertained while enhancing their creativity and fine motor skills.kid zone

The Kids Zone was a highlight for many families, thanks to a collaborative effort among volunteers. Gray worked with Experience El Dorado staff, Walter’s Pumpkin Patch and a Butler student intern who introduced new ideas like friendship bracelets and beaded pumpkins.

“The kids loved the new activities,” Gray said. “It was great to see them create and enjoy themselves”.

Beyond the children’s area, volunteers played crucial roles in organizing the festival's set-up and logistics. Michaela Rippe, a participant, praised the team for their work in helping manage activities like the mechanical bull, lawn games, and food truck areas.

“Volunteers helped with everything from setting up the crafts to guiding people through the activities,” Rippe said, adding that the volunteers were vital in keeping things organized and fun.

For the volunteers, Gold Fest was more than just another weekend event. Butler CC students, middle schoolers and community members came together to serve, gaining valuable experience in teamwork and leadership.

“It was a long day on our feet, but we all enjoyed working towards a shared goal,” Gray said.

The success of Gold Fest serves as a testament to the importance of community involvement. Whether guiding children through the activities or assisting with the logistical challenges of a large event, the volunteers' efforts ensured that Gold Fest was a memorable experience for all.
