We all know Thanksgiving, but what is Friendsgiving?
The term ‘Friendsgiving’ first appeared in a 2007 tweet, which to an informal Thanksgiving celebration with friends. While the word, “Friendsgiving,” was coined in 2007, the concept has been around much longer with lots of people crediting the idea to the TV show Friends. Whether it was invented in 2007 or 1994, there’s one thing that is clear; Friendsgiving is here to stay.
Friendsgiving is growing increasingly more popular with young Americans more so than Thanksgiving. StudyFinds show that 70% of young Americans plan on attending one and that 60% agree that it is more relaxing than a tradition Thanksgiving. We all know that the holidays can be stressful, especially Thanksgiving. This is a reason cited as to why the younger generation is opting for the less stressful and trendier option.
Not only does it allow for a breath in between two stressful holidays, but it also allows you to feel a sense of community. Seasonal depression is real and so is social isolation, especially withing college students and young adults. Celebrations like Friendsgiving and Friendsmas remind those people that while they may feel like they’re alone, there’s a lot more people to count on than they originally thought.
The menu for Friendsgiving is not much different than a traditional Thanksgiving meal, but there are new recipes and varieties to be found. One example is Mac and Cheese; it has been a staple at lots of tables over the years, but recipes like Chef Tini’s on TikTok have people heading to the store and selling out Cavatappi pasta. Another change that could be seen is the almost sudden love of charcuterie boards. Charcuterie boards have always been popular but the love of them sky-rocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, much like Friendsgiving. In the pas six years these boards have almost become a staple for young people during any type of celebration.
The holiday of Thanksgiving is about gratitude but in recent years it seems it has become more of a precursor to Christmas. Maybe with this new bonus holiday latched on to it, Thanksgiving could make a comeback in the hearts of younger Americans. It may also serve a new perspective on the holiday and encourage them to see that holidays don’t always have be shared with the family you’re given; it can be shared with the family that you choose.
