Theatre events at Butler CC over the summer have more to do with maintaining and fixing performance space issues. A lot of cleaning and maintenance happens on light fixtures, sound monitors, and backstage/ storage areas.
The Technical Theatre Director Caden Runnalls said that they do not have a summer theater program that puts on shows, but they encourage their students to audition for community theater around the Wichita area. A lot of students audition for MTW (Music Theatre Wichita), Kechi Playhouse and Children’s Theatre Wichita.
“We plan to host some Delta Psi Omega (Butler CC’s theatre fraternity) parties for our returning theatre scholars,” Runnalls said. “We might be watching movies on our projector screen in the theater. We might be going out to El Dorado Lake and having a cookout. Keeping the students engaged while also letting them rest over the summer.”
Another part of this summer that isn’t an annual thing is their search for faculty for their theater program after the retirement of Bob Peterson, that left a hole in their production team.
Student Jacob Antle who is going to be a sophomore at Butler next year has participated in a lot of theatre. Antle will be auditioning for the Newton Community Theatre production of “Guy and Dolls” over the summer, and he will help with technical directing.
