As summer returns, El Dorado State Park's Walnut River Area trail once again invites families and outdoor people to its sandy beach, winding trails and sparkling lake. Nestled just southwest of the dam at El Dorado Lake, this popular spot offers more than 2,000 acres of shoreline, trails, campsites and recreation facilities.
Tucked within the Walnut River area just 3 miles east of town off US‑54, the trailhead offers more than a gateway to hiking. A wide, sandy beach with picnic tables and a designated swimming area invites families, anglers and cyclists to linger in nature’s calm embrace.
Nearby, campsites complete with water, electric and sewer hookups including ADA-accessible spots cluster in the Walnut River and Eagle Pass campgrounds. These campgrounds provide easy access to both the beach and trail systems, making the area a perfect home base for a weekend getaway or an extended stay.
But it's the natural beauty and peaceful area that keeps visitors returning season after season. The beach area features soft sand underfoot and gently lapping waves that make it ideal for children to swim and play safely. Lifeguards are not on duty, so parents are encouraged to keep a watchful eye, but the roped off swim zone provides an added layer of safety.
The trailhead itself connects to a network of multi-use trails suited for hiking, biking and wildlife watching. One of the most popular paths is the Walnut Ridge Trail, a scenic loop that meanders through tallgrass prairie, shaded oak groves and alongside creek beds. The trail is well-marked, and maps are available at the information kiosk near the trailhead parking area.
Park staff regularly maintain the beach and surrounding areas, including the restrooms, picnic shelters and playgrounds. Day-use passes are available at the entrance to the park and annual permits can be purchased online or at the local park office.
People who like to fish also flock to the area, with catfish, bass and crappie commonly found near the shore and around the lake’s many inlets. In the early morning and evening hours, it’s not uncommon to see anglers casting lines while herons stalk the shallows.
For visitors who want a bit more structure to their day, the park occasionally hosts nature walks, kids’ fishing clinics and campfire programs. These events are listed on the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks website and often fill up quickly during peak months.
Whether you’re looking to take a cool dip on a hot afternoon, bike through Kansas’ diverse landscapes, or simply sit by the water and unwind, the Walnut River Trailhead and beach area at El Dorado State Park has something for everyone.
As the sun sets over the lake, casting a glow across the sand and water, it’s known to be a fun swim area for many.
